Google is turning its pistol emoji into a squirt gun

Image
A few years ago, Apple was the first big emoji designer to stop rendering the "pistol" emoji as a real gun. It went from a revolver to a green squirt gun, and other companies have just started coming around. Twitter and Samsung already made the change, and now it's Google's turn. Say goodbye to the revolver and hello to the super soaker. Google has updated its Noto Color Emoji repository on GitHub with the new emoji. That indicates that Android P will feature the redesigned pistol emoji. It's orange with a large yellow water reservoir on the top. So, it's a super soaker, which is even more toy-like than the other squirt gun alternatives we've seen. You can see below how the Google pistol emoji has changed over the years—my personal favorite was 2013. Very whimsical. Some users are fiercely loyal to their emoji. You might remember how hard the loss of the Android blob emoji hit us last year. Some will no doubt point out changing an emoji is

Instagram finally lets you download your photos, gets batch uploading in Stories

Image
Instagram has just announced  improvements to Stories  which will be coming to the Android and iOS apps soon. Instagram Stories, which have become increasing popular on the platform, replicate the ephemerality of Snapchat by having photos and videos expire automatically 24 hours after being uploaded. With the app update that is currently rolling out, users will be able to upload multiple photos and videos to their Stories at a time. Now, when selecting gallery content to add to Stories, a user will see a new icon on the top right of the screen which will allow them to pick up to 10 photos and videos to upload all at once. As before, users can edit each one individually using things such as stickers or text, and then have the content uploaded to their Stories in the order they chose. Instagram is also making it faster to add a location sticker to a Story by automatically suggesting relevant locations directly inside the sticker menu. Until now, adding a location sticker w

Truecaller now has over 100 million daily active users who don’t care about privacy

Image
Truecaller, the popular caller ID app, now has more than 100 million daily active users as announced by the company in a blog post. It is a major milestone for a mobile-only product that was first launched in 2009 for BlackBerry devices of the time. While Truecaller started as a caller ID and spam-blocking service, it has evolved into a full-fledged communications platform with calling, messaging, and payment services over the few years. Some, like me, though feel that it has become too bloated for the primary use case that made it almost ubiquitous in some markets. The success of the Truecaller piggybacks on emerging markets like India where spam calls are a major nuisance and privacy concerns are low. Most people don’t mind sharing their entire contacts list to gain the benefit of identifying callers and avoiding spam calls. India is a huge market, and the criticism from users in other countries is countered by the large user base in India and other emerging markets.

Instagram tests out a redesigned layout for the Explore tab

Image
Instagram's feed tab is probably the one in which users spend most of their time, since it's the one with pictures and videos from people and brands you actually chose to follow. The "Explore" tab, on the other hand, is meant to surface content from users you  don't  follow, either because it's content that's popular on Instagram or just because some algorithm decided you might like it. Honestly, it's so often littered with bad memes and overly-filtered photos that I avoid it for the most part. However, Instagram seems to be working on a redesign of the Explore tab that would seem to make it a little easier to browse, as first spotted by  TechPP . The new layout organizes and groups photos and videos by topics such as photography, people, or sports. The different genres are shown in a carousel layout at the top of the screen (where recommended Stories used to be), so users can cycle through them easily and tap on one they'd like to see more of

Facebook is making global privacy changes based on EU data legislation

Image
Facebook announced yesterday that it's going to be making policy changes for users around the world based on the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Although GDPR doesn't take effect until May 25, Facebook says it's rolling out the changes in Europe this week, with other regions following later. Changes include the ability to opt out of ads based on data collected from external websites that use tools like the Facebook Like button. Facebook will also make it easier to delete information about users' religious and political affiliations and relationship status, ostensibly removing that information from the pool of data advertisers can use to characterize them, although Facebook didn't say opting out of ads based on those identifiers will be possible without removing the information entirely. GDRP provides additional protections for young people in certain countries, like requiring parental permission for Facebook to show ads

Samsung built a smartphone that doesn't connect to the internet

Image
Most of a smartphone's "smarts" come from its data connection. Without access to the internet—and, therefore, access to things like third-party apps—a smartphone is really just a dumbphone with a touchscreen. By all appearances, that's exactly what Samsung's built with its new Galaxy J2 Pro: a smartphone that supports calls and texts, but with no data connectivity. The Galaxy J2 Pro is being pushed for students and older folks, so the lack of data is a marketable advantage. Parents hoping to free their children from distraction can pick one up for the kiddo, and not have to worry about content from third-party apps or dank internet memes from corrupting their young minds, though they can still be reached by call and text. And seniors that might not be comfortable with technology can have something a bit more reliable and performant than a flip phone without worries about apps or data. Specs include a 5" SAMOLED display, qHD (960x540) display,
